About Us

At our core, we believe caregiving is more than a job, it’s a calling.

Founded by Candace and Ciara, our community is built on empathy, connection and meaningful growth.

Our Story

Our Small Beginnings began at 3 pounds and ten weeks premature... what feels like forever ago! We worked hard to get them to twelve pounds at one year old. Can you imagine that? As they began to miss developmental milestones they were diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and developmental delays at around one year due to insufficient oxygen to their brain with their premature births. They started early intervention immediately after discharge from the NICU at 10 weeks, arriving home at a whopping 4.5 pounds. When they were late elementary we reached out for some assistance and so began our journey of adding caregivers after school in our home through Bayada. They mostly enjoyed their school journey in their Life Skills classes and the STARR program. They loved to "pay it forward" with random acts of kindness, adapted ski in upstate New York, run with Ainsley's Angels, participate in Unified Sports, be part of the group in school musicals, participate in their church events, glaze and sell mugs from our own kiln, and even tried out wheelchair hockey. Until everything closed down in March of 2020.

We thought we knew our plan for them at 21, but like everyone else, 2020 had other ideas. We eventually chose to self-direct their days as best we could, using a model allowed by the state after receiving a waiver. We are forever grateful we could submit trusted family and friends for hire while doing our own scheduling and finding activities...not easy during the pandemic. Our first volunteering gig was to deliver Meals on Wheels as there were little opportunities and interactions allowed in early 2020. Their job was to pass the meal forward in the van and say a blessing over the food and for the person receiving it inside the house. Like all of us, Candace and Ciara feel best feeling purpose. In time we eventually fell into a routine of Physical Therapy, Art Therapy, exercise, volunteer work, and pursuing hobbies and interests. They continue to volunteer at thrift shops, food pantries, children's ministry, disability ministry, the MRC, Ram Packs, with visiting older friends sprinkled in.

We recently returned to using the agency model of care. (OneWell Healthcare)

But the journey began with a vision: a place where caregivers don’t just clock in,

but feel valued, knowing they are part of something greater. Seeing the positive impact of your work on others’ lives can be incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that your efforts contribute to someone else's success or happiness provides a sense of purpose and satisfaction. Assisting Candace and Ciara to live healthy lives and feel purpose and receiving purpose in return creates a fulfilling professional journey.

We created this community in hopes that everyday acts of care become powerful transformations

both for Candace and Ciara and for and for the caregivers themselves.

Today, we continue to honour that vision by offering

a true sense of belonging to a team committed to purpose.

CORE VALUES

  • Compassion: We lead with heart, understanding that every person has a story worth listening to.
Compassion is the cornerstone of everything we do its how we connect, comfort, and empower those we care for. We approach each interaction with empathy and respect, ensuring that every individual feels seen, heard, and valued.

  • Connection: We believe that true care begins with genuine relationships caregiver to client, and caregiver to peer.
Our work isn’t just about providing assistance; it’s about creating bonds that foster trust, joy, and belonging. When we connect with others authentically, we nurture emotional well-being and build a stronger, more unified community.

  • Growth: We support learning, development, and meaningful career journeys.
Caregiving is a path of personal and professional evolution. Every experience from a heartfelt conversation to a new certification helps us grow into more capable, compassionate versions of ourselves. We invest in education, mentorship, and reflection because growth enriches not only our careers but our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Caring at Small Beginnings.

What kind of physical assistance do the individuals require?

Caregivers assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting. While the goal is to ensure comfort and safety, both Candace and Ciara are able to weight-bear with assistance.

Is there specialized equipment for transfers?

Yes. A Hoyer lift is available within the home to assist with transfers. We provide full training on all lifting and transfer techniques to ensure the safety of both the caregiver and the individuals.

What does a typical day look like?

Our days are a blend of "fun" and "purposeful." We follow a schedule that includes engaging activities tailored to individual interests and regular volunteering sessions.

Can I suggest new activities?

Absolutely! We encourage our team to bring their own ideas and creativity to the table to help enhance the lives of the ladies.

Who manages the hiring and payroll process?

We partner with OneWell, our agency of record. They manage hiring, employee monitoring, and the documentation platform.

How do I track my daily tasks and notes?

All documentation and record-keeping are handled through the OneWell app. It is vital that daily activities are recorded accurately within the app.

How strict is the scheduling?

Because the ladies cannot be left unattended, dependability is our highest priority. Caregivers must be mindful of their shift times to ensure there is never a gap in supervision or care.

What is expected in terms of emotional support?

Beyond physical care, we look for caregivers who foster a positive, encouraging environment. Companionship and mental well-being are just as important as physical safety.

Who will I be communicating with regarding care needs?

You will maintain an open line of communication with the individuals, their family, and the OneWell agency to ensure a cohesive care plan.
